About Mattresses...

Open Coil Mattresses

Open Coil sprung mattresses are the most widely available and cost effective mattresses on the market. The coil construction provides the required support with a variety of fillings that add to the comfort to the mattress. Each Open Coil spring system has a height of approximately 5 to 6 coils and is assembled into a single construction using helical wire. This is a thinner spiral wire which joins the coils at top and bottom to form the rows. The tightness of the coil is referred to as the gauge and an outer rod edge is then attached around the outside of the spring system to provide additional strength. The tension and firmness of each open coil mattress can be made by varying the use of a thicker wire with more twists and additional rows. Each double size standard mattress contains 325 of these coils, the spring count rises for larger king size and super king size mattresses. All manufacturers produce this type of spring system.

Pocket Sprung Mattresses

Pocket Sprung mattresses are one of the most widely used types of mattress on the market. Whilst more expensive than other types of mattress due to the time taken to manufacture the pocket springs, the quality of construction provides excellent body support and overall comfort. Each pocket sprung mattress contains anything between 600 and 3500 springs. Each spring is protected and isolated from the next (by being sewn into an individual pocket of soft durable fabric) in levelled rows and securely stitched to the base of the frame. The benefits of this construction enable each spring to react individually resulting in efficient exertion of pressure ensuring excellent support. Most manufacturers produce this type of spring system.

Miracoil Mattresses

Silentnight developed the unique Miracoil Spring System with springs running head to toe enabling even body weight distribution up and down the bed giving you and your partner support despite varying weight differences. With the added benefit of no roll-together and no roll-out you are assured of a comfortable and supportive night's sleep on a Silentnight bed or mattress.

Memory Foam Mattresses

Visco Elastic Memory Foam mattresses are now firmly established in the United Kingdom with variations such as: Open Coil/Memory Foam, Miracoil/Memory Foam, Pocket Springs/Memory Foam and Reflex Foam Base Foam/Memory Foam. Visco elastic memory foam was originally developed by NASA to absorb the G-Forces encountered by astronauts to protect their bodies. This foam softens and moulds with body heat promoting good blood circulation combined with unique pressure relieving and even weight distribution qualities for a natural sleeping position. The visco elastic recovers to its original state once the body weight is removed. On this website you will find a selection of Memory Foam mattresses from the brand name manufacturers such as Silentnight, and MLily. With such keen interest amongst consumers for everything Memory Foam (and Latex), from mattresses to sleep accessories, the culmination of research and development by Manufacturers brought quality and competitive products to the UK market. A large range of memory foam mattresses are available in vacuum packed rolls for easy transportation. There are a variety of uniquely designed memory foam and latex mattresses available specifically engineered to allow for a more cooler sleep experience incorporating three dimensional air channelling, corrugation design to the top surface of the memory foam and patented 3D-Spacer fabric in the cover. Other mattresses offer added 'bounce' (rebound properties) combining Visco Elastic and Laytech foam technology. Superior support coupled with memory foam 'temperature sensitive' properties conforming to the body providing optimum pressure relief. Mattress incorporating a 'higher density' memory foam offer a 'firmer feel' and mattresses incorporation 'medium density' memory foam combining unique pressure relieving and even weight distribution qualities of a 'visco-elastic' memory foam with a luxurious softer feel. Reflex Foam mattresses cater for people requiring a Soft or Firm sleeping surface to their mattress. An alternative to expensive Natural Latex is the 'Laytech' advanced polyurethane foam with honeycomb aerating properties allowing the dispersal of body weight over a greater area compared to conventional mattresses. Memory Foam and Latex mattresses are available in a variety of luxurious and comfortable knitted stretch fabrics thus allowing the mattress to breath. Some memory foam and latex mattress have pillow tops attached to the mattress or the mattress is encased in the foam, the more conventional way is for the Memory Foam or Latex to be on top of the mattress. These mattresses have the benefits of only needing to be rotated from end to end, known as a 'No Turn'.
